I have been checking vrbo. I love the site but I need some place that I can rent for 4 nights, most places require a 7 night stay.

A friend of ours is going to spend a few days in NYC in September and we are trying to help her find some decent accommodations for a reasonable price. The offers in craiglist seem good – some seem to good to be true but, there is the deposit issue – supposedly to reserve the place. We wonder if this is a secure procedure, if it could be scam? We have no way of checking it in person.

I did read about scam and fraud but it is still hard to know if it is a real thing or not.

There are many, many scams on craigslist! Things to avoid:

Apartments under $100/night – You’ll find loads of beautifully furnished apartments advertised for $60, $65, $70 per night (or 2 or 3 bedrooms for $100-$125/night) with amazing photographs, sun drenched rooms and decor. These are NOT actual NYC apartments, they are pictures taken from other cities, real estate sites, magazines, etc. .

Most scammers will ask you to wire a deposit via Western Union. DON’T DO IT! They price the nightly rates low to attract you, but their real goal is to get you to send a deposit, which you’ll never see again. And contrary to popular belief, you are also not 100% safe using Paypal, as the scammers have begun using that as well. If you do use paypal, use a credit card so you can do a chargeback if there’s a problem.

Another obvious way to expose a scammer is that they list several apartments at the same time (in a row) with similarities such as using a yahoo email account (also ymail, gmail) or broken english in the ad or in their response (most scammers are overseas). Look for traits such as writing an email address twice like this:

joe_scammer@yahoo.com
joe_scammer@yahoo.com

(They use the same pattern but with different email names)

Another way to expose a scammer is to flag the ad as "spam" and hit refresh in your browser. Many scam ads will get removed after a single flag, because they post in other cities as well and get flagged all the time. Many scammers will post especially late at night/early in the morning when there is less of a chance that they’ll be flagged since less people visit, but they do also post all day long.

Last and most important…. do a google search for the email, name or address of the person or website. There are many websites & blogs dedicated to getting ripped off. There are even some websites that advertise on craigslist that have scammed or left people homeless when they arrived.

There are of course, legit ads on craigslist but it’s up to you to do your homework!

Grandma is paying for this vacation and last year she did the same thing. She is paying 10,000 dollars a week for the family to stay in this beach front home in Myrtle beach. It does not have to be all indoors, but we want it to be creative if it is indoors. Please let me know some ideas you might have. Thanks

Myrtle Beach has Medieval Times there. It’s a place where you eat dinner at tables with your group while watching a play/performance.

Your best bet is to get online and do a google search. Call the places up and negotiate. This is the slow season anyway. Then there is that pesky oil spill that hasn’t even come close to the Keys, but people apparently are freaking out and cancelling reservations, so innkeepers are "hungry" at the moment.

Are there any luxury vacation house rentals on the east coast available to adults under the age of 25 that are actually nice beachfront houses? Like are there any available to us with like 6+ bedrooms and bathrooms? I’m tired of taking dives just because we’re under the age of 25.

Pick your vacation city and call a realtor. After he talks with you on the phone he might sense you are responsible and his customers may be persuaded to rent to you. Many groups of 6+ people tend to party too much and destroy the properties. It’s the same thing renting a car. If you’re not 25 you’re screwed.

Being under 25 you may have to pay a double deposit as a security binder. Offer that token and see if they accept it.

You may be tired of taking dives because of your age, but landlords are tired of taking kids under 25 who want to trash their luxury home.

Now, this may not describe you and your friends, but, the majority of those under 25 renting homes for a vacation or spring break do not take care of the place like they should.

My family and I are planning on vacationing at some beach in Cali at the end of July, so I just wanted to get some opinions of peoples’ favorite beaches there and why?

Laguna Beach.. its a cove and not quite so busy

Santa Monica .. its where I lived ..and its a beautiful beach
Venice Beach is a myriad of character on the boardwalk.
You can people watch all day.
I like Malibu –Huntington Beaches.. as I like surfing
Zuma I like because its down the road from Malibu and its not packed with LA people, like Santa Monica beach is.
Hermosa Beach.. you can stay there a little more affordable..but anything close to the beach will cost you.

The hotels by LAX Int’l Airport are some of the most reasonable motels.. and LAX isnt that far from the ocean. Youre midway between Orange and LA county beaches..closer to LA.
